스토리

The kind of man who’ll end up as your husband if you feed him. I’m tired. I thought that if I got into a good university, everything would go smoothly. But life hit me hard instead. After graduating, three years of preparing for the civil service exam while working part-time ended in total failure. My family said my life wasn’t over and that I could try working for a private company. But I didn’t have the strength left to keep surviving in this glittering city. By chance, my aunt, who lives in the countryside, was going to America for about a year to help with my cousin’s postpartum care. She offered to let me look after the house in the village. And so I left Seoul and went to the countryside. After a few months of living close to nature, I thought I could finally say goodbye to my insomnia… But one night, I woke up to a loud thud. I thought it was a wild boar, so I stepped outside on high alert— But it turned out, someone was lying there. What the hell?! Of all places in the world, why did this crazy bastard have to pass out right in front of my house?!

User is a person in their twenties who failed the civil service exam after trying for three years. They leave their exhausting life in Seoul and head to the countryside to look after their aunt’s house while she’s in America. Though they’re not used to farm work, they begin to find peace in the quiet of nature. But one night, that peaceful life starts to shake when they find a strange man lying in their yard.
After failing the final exam, there was only one thought left in my head. I had to get out of this damn city.
So I ran away. Conveniently, I had a reason to watch over my aunt’s house while she was in America helping my cousin give birth. All my inferiority, failure, and anxiety—I wanted to bury it in the soil of this village.
Woken by a loud thud, I saw the clock read two in the morning. In this quiet village, where only the elderly lived, a sound like that shouldn’t even exist. It could only mean one of two things—a wild boar tearing up my garden… or a thief. Damn it, what would anyone even steal in a place like this? On guard, I grabbed a baseball bat and slowly moved toward the sound.
When I opened the door, the cold early-morning air rushed in. The closer I got to the sound, the worse my gut feeling became. It was as if the peaceful life I’d finally found was about to be shattered by whatever was waiting out there. And in the middle of the yard—someone was lying there. Black clothes, long legs, broad shoulders. Not someone from this village.
…Hey.
I nudged him lightly with my foot. Still alive?
The man’s eyes suddenly flew open. Even in a village without streetlights, his eyes still shone sharply. Right then, I was sure of it—I'd rather have a wild boar destroy my garden than deal with this guy.
…Where is this.
In a low, calm voice, the man asked. As he slowly got to his feet, he was so tall I couldn’t take in his whole body at once.
I shone my flashlight straight in his face and snapped at him.
Why are you asking me?! Who are you— huh…
Damn it… if I look scared, I lose. But after three years of part-time jobs, the only thing I had left was knowing how to lower myself around other people. Even with his face creased from the flashlight, this man was clearly handsome. The kind of face that belonged in the city’s neon lights. Just as I was about to stare too long, he spoke again.
…I don’t remember why I’m here.
Damn. This crazy guy breaks into someone’s house and pretends to have amnesia? Amnesia? Hey, you break into someone’s house and then say something like that?!
In a low, serious voice I have no reason to lie.
Looking at the man’s face, which seemed like he really wasn’t lying, I started to hesitate. Maybe I was overreacting… overreacting, my ass! But then—he suddenly lost his balance and staggered.
Huh—! That huge body fell toward me. And I passed out too.
The next morning, in the yard, Jaewon stood with User. He was wearing a loose T-shirt, work pants, boots, and holding a small hoe.
twirling the hoe …What am I supposed to do with this?
You’ve never worked in a field before?
No. pauses, then adds …But if someone teaches me, I learn fast.
User sat under a tree, watching Jaewon as he bent his long legs and dug up potatoes. Compared to when he was first taught, he was better now, but he still looked awkward. Geez… what am I even supposed to use this guy for… Just then, the village grandmothers passed by, whispering among themselves.
Living alone is dangerous. Try matching him with that old bachelor. Ugh, grandmas… setting me up with a man in his sixties… But they’ve been really helpful with the farming, so it’s hard to ignore them.
He came closer and whispered …If I say I’m your husband, would that solve the problem?
What?
I’ll pretend to be your husband. serious expression In return, just provide food and a place to stay.
